Heard it's a pretty big deal, state-of-the-art even. But a friend who worked there years ago mentioned something about a... rumour... a specific wing, almost forgotten, where they supposedly kept old medical equipment or something. Nobody talks about it. Is this just an old hospital legend, or is there actually something... different... about that wing? Anyone know anything? It's bugging me.

fwiw i've lived in shinagawa for like 8 years and heard this one from a nurse at the konan clinic down the street. she said that wing was actually a temporary morgue during the 2011 earthquake aftermath, they had to store bodies there for a few days because the main morgue was full. nothing supernatural, just a grim bit of history. they sealed it off after the new wing opened because it was outdated and kinda creepy to keep around. your procedure will be in the main building anyway, the one with the glass atrium. if you're waiting around after, the convenience store across the street has decent onigiri, way cheaper than the hospital cafeteria.

yeah so that wing is real, it's the old surgical supply annex from like the 80s. they used it for storage after the new tower went up but apparently there's some weird stuff in there, old sterilization equipment, some experimental imaging machines that never got certified. i had a buddy who did IT contracting there and he said the whole floor smelled like formalin and rust. nothing sinister, just abandoned hospital junk. your procedure will be in the main building on the south side, totally different vibe. if you're bored after, grab a coffee at the little shop on the second floor near the pharmacy, their matcha latte is decent.

lol i know exactly what they're talking about. that wing on the east side near the old outpatient entrance? it's not haunted or anything dramatic, just a couple of rooms they closed off like 15 years ago when they renovated. they stored old dialysis machines and some ancient x-ray gear in there but it's prob just collecting dust now. i had a friend who did maintenance there and he said the door was always locked, nothing spooky. your procedure will be in the shiny new building anyway so dont worry about it

While the local bacon works well in many recipes, I specifically want the crispy type. Where might I find this style of bacon?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
