No idea about the cat statue, that's seriously bizarre. Daily Yamazaki's in Shinjuku are always a chaotic mess, though. Maybe it's just some employee's quirky personal item they've stashed up there? Or maybe it's a really, really old promotional thing from when dinosaurs roamed the earth and ramen was 5 yen. You should ask the staff – they probably see way crazier stuff than a creepy cat figurine on a daily basis. They're used to the salarymen, the students... who knows what else walks in those doors.

Try the little cafes tucked away near Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. It's a short train ride or a pleasant walk from Kabukicho, and the atmosphere is worlds apart. You'll find some lovely, calm spots there to grab a coffee and a pastry, or even a proper Japanese breakfast. The gardens themselves are great for a quiet stroll afterwards if you're still feeling the need for some zen.
