Seriously considering booking a single room, but the reviews are...mixed. Some say it's quiet enough, others mention the noise from Kabukicho all night. So, my question is: how loud is it really? I need sleep, people! I'm not looking to party, just to explore Tokyo during the day and crash at night. Any tips for a light sleeper choosing a hotel in this area would be greatly appreciated.

yeah it's loud. i've stayed in that area before and the walls are thin. if you're a light sleeper request a room facing away from the main street or as high up as possible. bring earplugs and maybe a white noise app on your phone. honestly for similar money you could look at hotels near shinjuku station's east exit instead, like the sunroute plaza, way less street noise and still close to everything

Toyoko Inn in Kabukicho? Oof. It's a gamble. Kabukicho is loud. Like, sirens, shouting, drunk singing, the whole shebang until the wee hours. Even with a single room, you'll probably hear something.

I'm a pretty heavy sleeper and I wouldn't pick that location for a peaceful night's rest. If sleep is a priority, seriously consider somewhere else in Shinjuku, even a slightly more expensive option further from the main Kabukicho drag. You'll thank yourself in the morning. Think quieter areas near Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, maybe. That'll be a world apart.

honestly if you're a light sleeper i'd skip toyoko inn and look at the citadines central shinjuku tokyo instead. it's a 5 minute walk south past the shinjuku prince hotel and the rooms are way better soundproofed. i've had friends crash there after late nights in golden gai and they said the double glazing actually works. kabukicho noise peaks around 1-2am with the izakaya crowds spilling out so if you're in bed by 11 you might catch the worst of it anyway. for the same price range you could also check the apa hotel shinjuku-gyoemmae which is tucked behind the park and dead quiet at night

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
