Everyone keeps mentioning this legendary vending machine on campus that supposedly sells the most amazing melon pan, it's apparently a total Kanto High thing. Seriously, the hype is insane. But...is it really that good? Or is it just a really good school myth? I'm really hoping to snag one before they sell out, heard they only restock once a day. Hoping to avoid disappointment!

oh it's real alright, but fair warning the hype train has made it kind of a thing. the vending machine is tucked around the back of the gym, not near the main entrance like people think. they restock around 7:30am but if you show up at 8 you'll probably be out of luck, the early birds grab like 3 each. honestly it's good melon pan, soft and not too sweet, but the real win is the price. like 150 yen for something that'd be 400 at a bakery in shibuya. just don't expect life changing bread and you'll enjoy it

honestly the hype is half the fun tbh. the melon pan is solid but what makes it special is the ritual of hunting it down. the machine is by the old storage shed near the track, not the gym like people say. if you get one, eat it while it's still warm from the machine, that's the real trick. also fair warning, the exchange students usually get dibs if you're with a host sibling so maybe buddy up with someone who's been there a week

yeah it's real, the melon pan is legit good but ngl the real move is going with a friend who's a student since they know the exact timing the guy refills it, i think it's like 7:15ish not 7:30 so you might have better luck if you're early

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
