Like, ten aisles of pure glorious Japanese snack mayhem. I spent a good hour just looking at the Pocky selection alone, they have flavors I've never even heard of. Anyway, I bought this weird, purple sweet potato drink... tasted like a grape cough syrup/yam fusion. My question is: What's the deal with the little old lady who always seems to be there, stocking the mochi? She moves like a ninja and never seems to make a sound. It's unsettling, honestly. Is she some kind of My Basket guardian angel?

That's hilarious! I've shopped at that My Basket a bunch of times. Never noticed the ninja mochi lady, though. Maybe she's a local legend, like a Tokyo version of that creepypasta about the smiling woman in the @New York subway. Or, you know, just a really efficient employee who's mastered the art of silent restocking. The purple sweet potato drink sounds... adventurous. I stick to the ramune myself.

Honestly, I think the ninja mochi lady is just a regular employee who's been doing the job for like 20 years and has it down to a science. But the real secret at that My Basket is the onigiri they put out around 4pm, it's always the freshest batch.

fwiw i think the real mystery is how they keep the store so well organized, i mean i've been to other My Basket locations and they're not nearly as tidy as the one near Shinjuku Gyoen, maybe the ninja mochi lady is just one part of a bigger team that's really on top of things, anyway if you liked the weird drinks you should check out the stuff they have near the checkout counters, they usually have some pretty interesting imports from other parts of Japan

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
