Locals say it's haunted, full of whispering spirits. I didn't see anything supernatural, but the sheer decay, the feeling of forgotten lives... it was chilling. Seriously though, what's the story behind its abandonment? Was it a sudden closure, or a gradual decline? I'd love to know more about its history before it became... this.

yeah the hospital was never gonna survive the 2000s, the town's population has been shrinking since the 80s so there just wasn't enough patients to justify keeping a whole building like that going. the prefecture actually tried to merge it with a clinic in Ome a few times but the local council kept voting it down, classic bureaucratic mess.

if you want the real creepy vibe, check the basement where they kept the old X-ray machines. the lead-lined doors are still there, and someone's left a bunch of old film negatives scattered around. no ghosts but the silence down there hits different. also the parking lot on the north side has this weird overgrown path that leads to a small shrine, locals still leave offerings there, not for the hospital but for the mountain behind it.

honestly, the haunted stuff is just locals having fun with hikers. the real story is way more boring and sad. it was a TB sanatorium back in the day, then a general hospital, but by the 90s it was bleeding money. the town couldn't afford to keep it running, so they just... locked it up around 2003. no dramatic collapse, just budget cuts and an aging building that cost too much to fix.

if you're into decay, you should check the old nurses' dorm behind the main wing. it's more intact, and the graffiti there is from actual urbex folks, not ghost hunters. but be careful, the floor on the third level is rotten in spots. i went last spring and almost put my foot through a plank near the east stairwell. also, don't go on weekends, too many tourists with drones.

There's another layer to this place that rarely comes up. The hospital was actually built in the 1920s as a tuberculosis sanatorium, and the main building you see today was added in the 1950s. The original wing, the one with the curved roof near the back, still has the old open-air balconies where patients were wheeled out for fresh air therapy. That was the standard treatment back then, and a lot of people died there, not from ghosts, but from the disease itself.

If you want to see something that actually gives you chills, check the small wooden annex behind the main entrance. It's not marked on any map, and it's where they kept the bodies before burial. The door is half off its hinges, and inside there's a stone slab with drainage grooves still visible. It's not haunted, but standing there, you realize how many people passed through that room on their way out. The town records from the 30s show the hospital had a mortality rate of nearly forty percent, which is why the locals have always been a bit weird about the place, even before it closed.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
