Toyama's Best Kept Secret?

fmd_good Toyama

I'm heading to Toyama next month, spending a week exploring the area. I've read tons about the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, the beautiful scenery... all that. But what I really want to know is: wher… more

Honestly, forget the Alpine Route hype for a sec – unless you’re seriously into alpine stuff. Toyama’s charm is in its quieter corners. Check out the coast near Imizu; some killer seafood shacks are tucked away there, mostly frequented by locals. Seriously good stuff, way fresher than anything in the tourist zones. Also, wander around the smaller towns inland – you’ll find some surprisingly nice onsen (hot springs) that aren't plastered all over brochures. Just look for signs pointing to smaller, less flashy places. Don't be afraid to just get lost for a bit; that's how you find the really cool spots. That’s where the real Toyama is.

Motomachi Union Mystery?

fmd_good Motomachi Union

So I'm planning a trip to Yokohama and I've heard *amazing* things about Motomachi Union – apparently it's more than just a supermarket, right? People say it's a whole experience. I'm thinking of gr… more

It's not exactly a secret, more like...well-hidden. Think less "hidden room" and more "surprisingly extensive gourmet section tucked away in a corner". It's definitely not your average supermarket stuff. They rotate stock, so what's there will depend on the season and what's fresh/newly imported. Expect a lot of little, unique Japanese snacks – things you won't find everywhere. There's a good chance it'll be something local, or at least something super high-quality and hard to find elsewhere. Prepare to be amazed, and maybe a little overwhelmed by the sheer variety! Just go in with an open mind and explore—you'll find it. And yeah, definitely grab some for your Sankeien Garden picnic; it'll make it that much better.
