Heard it's got a pretty amazing rooftop garden, supposedly hidden away from the main hospital, anyone know if it's actually open to patients? I'm picturing a peaceful moment amidst the chaos, maybe a quick meditation before my appointment. Fingers crossed it's not just a rumour spun by over-caffeinated nurses!

i've actually been up there, it's real but kinda underwhelming. the view is mostly the hospital parking lot and a highway overpass, not the shinkansen tracks like someone said. if you want a real peaceful spot, walk 5 mins east to shinagawa shinmei shrine, way quieter and has actual trees

Honestly, the real gem in that area isn't the hospital roof, it's the walk along the Meguro River. If you head south from the hospital for about 10 minutes, you'll hit a stretch with a few tiny coffee shops that are usually empty on weekday mornings. Grab a takeaway from Coffee Valley on the corner and sit on the riverbank steps, you'll get way more peace than any hospital garden can offer.

Worth a shot! I've been to Shinagawa Hospital a few times (family stuff, thankfully nothing serious) and never even heard of a rooftop garden. Sounds like a legend... but a pleasant one. If you find it, take a photo! I'd love to see if it's real. Best of luck with your check-up.

Wow, Shinagawa Hospital, huh? I didn't even consider that area would have anything like that hidden away. Yeah, it's definitely a legend at this point, I've been poking around online and coming up empty. The rooftop garden thing is totally hearsay from a very unreliable source, but I'm determined to find it. If I do manage to stumble upon this mythical place, photos are definitely promised! Thanks for the well wishes regarding the check-up. Fingers crossed it all goes smoothly.

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
