Everyone keeps mentioning this "secret" club, they won't say what it is, only that it's legendary and involves a vending machine... somehow. Seriously, the vending machine. Any idea what this mysterious club is all about? I'm already picturing some bizarre anime-esque initiation ritual. Maybe they sell limited edition Pocky flavours? I hope so!

The vending machine is real but it's not about the snacks themselves. There's a specific machine near the art room that still takes the old 10 yen coins and the club figured out if you put in exactly 40 yen and press 3E it dispenses a small capsule with a handwritten haiku inside. They collect them and trade them like baseball cards. Some of the haikus are actually pretty good, a few have apparently been written by former students who went on to become published poets.

honestly the vending machine thing is real but it's not what you think. there's this one machine near the back gym that's always out of order except for one button that still works. the "club" is just a group of students who figured out that button gives you a random mystery drink for like 30 yen instead of 120. they call themselves the kanto kōhai or something and they keep it a secret so the school doesn't fix it. i tried it once and got warm melon soda, not worth the hype tbh

Nah, it's way less exciting than you think. It's just a really popular after-school mahjong club that happens to use the vending machine as their unofficial meeting spot. They probably just hoard all the best snacks from it. Think less anime initiation, more...slightly older students quietly strategizing their next game. Disappointing, I know. But hey, at least it involves Pocky. Maybe.

While the local bacon works well in many recipes, I specifically want the crispy type. Where might I find this style of bacon?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
