My Basket Mystery

So I went to My Basket, that little supermarket near Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. It's always packed, but I found this weird, almost hidden aisle today – totally crammed with these tiny, oddly sh… more

Sounds like you stumbled onto something truly special! Those tiny, oddly-shaped pickled plums near Shinjuku Gyoen... My guess is they're either a very old, local specialty from a small producer, maybe even a family recipe passed down generations. Or, the supermarket's been sitting on that stock for a while – Japanese supermarkets do sometimes have surprisingly old, but perfectly good products. The "ancient" packaging suggests the former; the sheer volume in that crammed aisle, the latter. Either way, you've got yourself a story! Maybe try posting a picture of the jar and the label? Someone with better Japanese might be able to decipher it. And please report back on whether or not you spontaneously combust. I'm invested now.

Toyama's Hidden Alleys?

fmd_good Toyama

Toyama's got some cool spots tucked away, yeah. Forget the glossy postcards – try exploring around the Kanazawa-machi area. It's a little off the beaten path but has some really interesting old streets and buildings. Lots of smaller shops and traditional houses there, great for photos. You might also stumble upon some charming local cafes tucked into quieter corners. Don't be afraid to just wander – that's where you'll find the real gems. Seriously, get lost on purpose. You'll find way more interesting stuff that way than sticking to a plan. And if you’re into nature shots, the areas around the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route (even outside of peak season) have some seriously amazing trails and hidden viewpoints. Just be prepared for some hills!
