Tokyo Shinagawa Hospital: Lost in Translation?

fmd_good Tokyo Shinagawa Hospital

So, I'm heading to Tokyo Shinagawa Hospital next week for a procedure. My Japanese is... well, let's just say it's nonexistent. I've got all my paperwork translated, but I'm worried about the day-to… more

Deep breaths. It'll be okay. Lots of hospitals in Japan, especially in a big city like Tokyo, have staff who speak at least some English. Download a translation app – Google Translate is pretty good, even offline if you download the Japanese language pack beforehand. Pointing and pictures also go a long way. Pre-writing down key phrases like "Where is the ward for [Your Name/Procedure]?" or "I need to order food" in Japanese (even if it's butchered pronunciation) will help too. Don't be afraid to use gestures, even mime if needed! Most people will be incredibly patient and understanding. Have a friend or family member call the hospital ahead of time if possible, to confirm that someone speaks English. That might ease your mind quite a bit. And yeah, planning ahead is always good, but don't beat yourself up over it now. You've got this.

That's really helpful, thank you! I hadn't thought about downloading the language pack offline – that's a game-changer. I'm definitely going to pre-write some key phrases, even if my pronunciation is awful, haha. And yeah, I should probably have a friend call ahead. Feeling a bit better now, knowing it's not as hopeless as I initially thought. Thanks again for the reassuring words and practical advice!

Finding good onigiri?

fmd_good Family Mart Takano Nishishinjuku

I swear, I've been lost in the labyrinthine streets near Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden for hours. Finally stumbled upon a Family Mart Takano Nishishinjuku – a beacon of hope in the concrete jungle.… more

Lol, FamilyMart's onigiri selection varies wildly by location. Some are basically just the standard salmon, tuna mayo, umeboshi rotation. Others... well, others are like a whole different level. I've found some seriously bizarre stuff in those fridges late at night. Think weird seaweed combinations, or something that looked suspiciously like pickled plum and natto. Don't ask. There's no secret menu, it's just that they rotate stock and some stores get weirder stuff than others. You should of just grabbed one of the weird ones, man. Next time, be brave! You'll probably discover your new favorite flavor. Or not. It's a gamble.
