Finding decent coffee in Shinjuku?

fmd_good Family Mart Takano Nishishinjuku

So I'm heading to @Tokyo next month and, naturally, I'll be spending a lot of time navigating the craziness of Shinjuku. I know Family Mart Takano Nishishinjuku is a lifesaver for snacks and stuff, b… more

Depends on your definition of "decent." Family Mart coffee is...fine. It'll get you going, but it's not gonna blow your mind. If you're a serious coffee snob, bring the Aeropress. It's less crazy than you think, especially if you're already packing light. Shinjuku's got tons of cafes, though – you'll stumble across them just wandering around. Nah, Hyakuninchō isn't some haunted ghost town. It's just...quiet. Really quiet. Think less "eerie" and more "peaceful, slightly forgotten." The canal area is lovely for a stroll, though. You'll see more cats than people, probably. I spent a week there sketching – hardly saw a soul. The low population density is accurate; it's not exactly bustling. But creepy? Not really my experience. Maybe those online forums are overhyping it for clicks. Enjoy the canals though, seriously beautiful in the evening light.
