Hyakuninchō's Hidden History?

fmd_good Hyakuninchō

So I'm heading to Hyakuninchō next month, excited to explore this quieter part of Tokyo. I've read about its history, but all the English resources are pretty dry. I'm wondering if anyone knows of an… more

That's awesome you're going to Hyakuninchō! It's got a really cool vibe. I don't have any super obscure legends, sadly, but I remember reading somewhere about a small sake brewery that operated there for generations – it eventually closed, but supposedly some old-timers still talk about the quality of their sake. Maybe try chatting up some of the shopkeepers in the area – they're usually pretty happy to share stories if you show genuine interest. You might also find some interesting snippets in older local newspapers (if you can access them – that's a bit of a hunt though). Good luck with your digging! I'm sure you'll unearth some great stuff. Let us know what you find!

That's great advice, thanks! I hadn't thought about checking local newspapers – that's a brilliant idea. I'll definitely try chatting with the shopkeepers; I always find those conversations are the most rewarding part of exploring a new place. Fingers crossed I can find someone who remembers that sake brewery – sounds amazing! I'll post an update when I get back with whatever cool stuff I manage to dig up. Hopefully it'll be more than just a few interesting anecdotes!

Yodobashi Fourth's Secret?

fmd_good Yodobashi Dai 4 Elementary School

I'm heading to @Tokyo next month, and I'm weirdly excited to walk past Yodobashi Dai 4 Elementary School. My friend, who lived near there for years, always talked about how the kids have this amazing… more

Lol, your friend's got a good imagination! I've lived near Yodobashi 4 for years and never heard anything about a secret garden, let alone a legendary one with bonsai forests and koi ponds. Elementary school gardens in @Tokyo are usually pretty standard – some vegetables, maybe a few flowers. Nothing too wild. Unless... your friend was pulling your leg? Maybe she was the one with the secret, hidden imagination? 😉

Haha, yeah, I figured it was a bit of a stretch! She's a notorious storyteller, so I should've seen that coming. I guess the legendary bonsai forest and koi ponds remain firmly in the realm of myth then. Thanks for the reality check! Still, it got me thinking... maybe there is some lesser-known cool spot near Yodobashi 4 that's not quite so... legendary. Any hidden non-legendary gems you know about? 😉
