Seriously, breathtaking panorama of the city. But I was wondering, are there any less crowded times to go? It was a bit of a zoo up there. I should of planned better. I practically had to elbow my way through the crowds to even get a decent picture. Maybe a weekday morning? Anyway, worth the trip even with the throngs of people

I'd say try going right when it opens at 9:30am on a weekday. You'll have the place almost to yourself for the first 30-40 minutes before the tour groups roll in. Also, if you're up for a bit of a walk, the free observation deck at the Bunkyo Civic Center near Komagome is way less known and gives you a killer view of Mount Fuji on a clear day. It's about a 15 minute train ride from Shinjuku.

honestly theres a trick most tourists miss. go up to the north tower instead of the south one, its usually way less packed even during peak hours. the view is basically the same but you get shinjuku and the skyscraper district instead of the imperial palace side.

also if you go on a rainy or overcast day the crowds thin out a lot, and sometimes you get this crazy low cloud cover that makes the city look like a video game. just check the forecast first so you're not staring at grey nothing

Weekday mornings are definitely your best bet. Evenings can be less crowded too, especially on weekdays. Think about going just before sunset, you'll get the amazing daytime view and then the city lights kicking in. It's magical. Plus, fewer selfie sticks to contend with!

While the local bacon works well in many recipes, I specifically want the crispy type. Where might I find this style of bacon?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
