Needed a serious caffeine hit and some weird Japanese snack to keep me going. They had ALL the things. Seriously, it felt like a mini-supermarket crammed into a convenient space. My question is: what's the weirdest, most unexpectedly delicious thing you've ever grabbed from a Family Mart at 3 am in Shinjuku? I need some recommendations for my next late-night adventure.

if you're near the shinjuku station south exit famima, the one with the two atms by the door, grab the "mentaiko pasta" from the hot food shelf. it's in a little plastic container with a fork taped to the side. the noodles are weirdly al dente for konbini food and the spicy cod roe sauce clings to everything. it's not a meal you'd think about during daytime hours but at 3am it's this perfect salty spicy carby bomb that makes you feel like you've won at late night japan

The konbini curry pan is slept on by tourists. Grab the one that's been sitting in the heated case too long, the one that's a little limp. That soggy bread soaked in curry sauce is pure 3 am magic. Pair it with a strong Boss coffee from the hot can shelf and you've got a meal that somehow fixes everything.

honestly the egg salad sandwich is the move. the one in the triangle shaped plastic. it looks so simple but the bread is impossibly soft and the egg mix is somehow creamy and savory at the same time. i always grab one from the famima near the shinjuku police box after a late night at golden gai. pair it with a hot matcha latte from the machine and you're set for the walk back

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
