It's practically a pilgrimage for anyone who's spent any time in Tokyo. This particular Lawson, though...man, the sheer variety of onigiri they had! I mean, I'm talking everything from classic salmon to some seriously adventurous combinations I couldn't even pronounce. I grabbed a couple, a Ramune soda, and stumbled back to my hotel. Question is: Did I make the right onigiri choice? I'm still thinking about that weird umeboshi and cheese one... Should of gone with the classic salmon, I reckon.

ngl that three-F lawson on okubo-dori is a whole vibe, it's like the last bastion of civilization before you crash. the umeboshi and cheese combo is actually a sleeper hit, i know it sounds wrong but the tangy pickled plum cuts through the processed cheese in a way that just works after a few drinks. next time skip the ramune though, grab a kirin chuhi or a strong zero from the fridge - way better for rehydrating on the walk back. also if you're still in the area, that same lawson has a hot food section in the back with karaage kun that's way better than the famichiki hype, trust me on that one

Umeboshi and cheese? That's a bold choice! Lawson's always has a wild selection, though. Part of the fun is the gamble. Next time, maybe try a spicy tuna one; those are usually pretty reliable. But hey, you lived to tell the tale of the umeboshi and cheese adventure, that's a win in itself. And Ramune is always a solid choice for a late-night post-Shinjuku recovery drink.

the real move at that lawson is grabbing one of the egg salad sandwiches from the refrigerated section near the registers. they're like 150 yen and way more satisfying than onigiri when you're borderline passing out. also between you and me the three-f location always has the best ice cream selection because it's one of the bigger ones, the haagen-dazs matcha cups are worth the extra hundred yen over a normal ice cream bar

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
