Matsunoki Mysteries?

Everyone keeps talking about the old shrine hidden somewhere in the woods... they say it's got some seriously creepy history. I'm into that kind of thing, but my Japanese is...well, let's just say I'll be relying heavily on Google Translate. Anyone know the best way to find this shrine without getting completely lost or encountering some yokai? Seriously considering bringing a GPS tracker and maybe a priest. lol.

Hah, Matsunoki! That area's got a reputation, alright. The old shrine...yeah, local legends say it's haunted. Getting there's half the fun, I guess. A GPS is a smart move, definitely. Don't rely entirely on Google Translate though; some of the kanji will be tricky, even with it. Try downloading a Japanese phrasebook app beforehand, at least for basic directions and "excuse me," "thank you," and "help!" Seriously, those will save your butt. Also, consider a map from a local convenience store near the station; they sometimes have more detailed local maps than you'd find online. And a priest? Maybe not necessary, unless you're genuinely worried about yokai. Just be respectful at the shrine itself, offer a small prayer or something. Good luck, and be careful out there!

Wow, thanks for the detailed reply! A Japanese phrasebook app is a great idea, hadn't thought of that. I'll definitely download one. And yeah, I figured Google Translate wouldn't be perfect, especially with the kanji. A local map sounds smart too; you're right, those convenience stores always seem to have the best stuff. The priest thing...I'm mostly joking, haha. But good point about being respectful at the shrine. I appreciate the heads-up about the area's reputation. Makes the whole Matsunoki mystery even more intriguing!

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
