I've seen a million photos of the panoramic views from the observation decks, but I'm wondering... what's the vibe like up there? Is it super crowded, all selfie sticks and jostling elbows, or is there a chance to actually soak in the view and feel a bit of peace amidst the city madness? I'm picturing myself sipping a lukewarm coffee from a vending machine, gazing out at @Shibuya's dazzling lights... but is that realistic, or am I setting myself up for disappointment?

Weekday mornings are the move, no question. I went up on a Wednesday around 9:30 and there were maybe 15 people total, most of them just standing quietly with their phones. The south observation deck has those little bench seats built into the corners near the windows where you can actually sit down and just watch the city without anyone hovering over you. If you're going at night, skip the main floor and head to the north tower's 45th floor instead, the lighting is dimmer and the reflections on the glass don't fight with the city lights as much. The vending machine coffee is fine but grab a hot can from the 7-Eleven in the basement of the main building before you go up, it's 30 yen cheaper and you can stand by the west-facing windows watching the Shinjuku skyscrapers blink on one by one.

ngl the shinjuku side view at night is underrated, everyone fights for the fuji spot but the city lights stretching out towards skytree is way more impressive to me. if u want peace go on a rainy weekday evening, i was there in a drizzle and maybe 10 other people total, the wet glass makes everything look like a cyberpunk filter. the vending machine coffee is fine tbh, just get a hot can of boss coffee and stand by the west windows, feels very tokyo

If you're going for the vibe rather than just the view, try the north tower instead of the main south one. It's got the same 45th floor height but way fewer people know about it, and the queue is usually half as long. The vending machine coffee is fine, but there's a Lawson's in the basement that sells hot cans of Boss for 100 yen less, grab one before you take the elevator up.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
