Anyway, I swear I saw a tiny, tiny cat scampering around the frozen food section. I'm pretty sure it wasn't a rat, it was way too fluffy. It vanished before I could get a photo though...Anyone else seen phantom cats in Motomachi Union?! It was a pretty weird experience. I've been to loads of supermarkets in @Japan, and that was a first.

Haha, that's a new one for Motomachi Union. I've seen plenty of weird stuff in there like the time they had a whole display of Korean snacks mixed in with the Mexican section, but never a phantom cat. The frozen food aisle is near the back exit that leads out to that little alley behind the store, so if there's a cat, that's probably how it got in. Next time you're there, check the pet food aisle by the registers. If it's real, that's where it'd be hiding.

i've seen cats hanging around the motomachi shopping street plenty of times, near the chinatown side entrance. wouldn't be surprised if one wandered into the frozen section, it's got that open back door for deliveries right? tbh i've found weirder stuff there like a whole bag of expired natto tucked behind the instant ramen once

No way! That's wild. Motomachi Union is massive, so a little cat could easily get lost in there. I've never seen anything like that, but I have seen some seriously questionable produce choices in the vegetable section... Maybe it's the supermarket's resident spirit animal? Protecting the ramen ingredients, perhaps? I'd love to see a picture if you ever manage to catch it again! Sounds like a legendary tale brewing.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
