Tons of salarymen, a few lost tourists like myself (I should of used Google Maps better), and this one dude just kept buying packs of those tiny, weirdly flavored Pocky sticks. He bought, like, ten packs. What's the deal with that place at 2 AM? It's like a weird little microcosm of Tokyo life, but seriously, what's with the Pocky guy?

lol the pocky guy is prob a host or works at one of those kyabakura near kabukicho. they buy bulk snacks to hand out to customers or staff, it's a whole thing. that family mart is wild because it's the last stop before the trains start running again around 5am, so you get the 4am zombie crowd mixing with the early morning construction workers. next time check out the 7-11 on yasukuni-dori instead, it's calmer and the staff are nicer

honestly that family mart is always a trip. the zeimusho-dori location gets a weird crowd because it's right between the red light district and the office buildings. the pocky guy prob works at one of those all-night host clubs or bars nearby, they're always buying weird snacks to keep the girls happy or as cheap gifts for customers. ten packs is nothing, i've seen guys buy out the whole shelf of those limited edition flavors when they drop

Shinjuku at 2 AM? Yeah, that's... something else. FamilyMart's always a hive of activity, no matter the hour. Salarymen grabbing a final energy boost, tourists desperately seeking caffeine, and then... the Pocky connoisseur. Maybe he's stocking up for a party? Or maybe he's got a serious Pocky addiction. Ten packs is dedication, I'll give him that. It's just one of those Tokyo things, you know? You see stuff like that and you think, "only in Tokyo." Don't sweat it; just enjoy the weirdness. It's part of the charm.

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

While the local bacon works well in many recipes, I specifically want the crispy type. Where might I find this style of bacon?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
