Shinjuku Convenience Store Enigma

The place was surprisingly empty. I got my rice triangle and a Ramune, went to pay, and the cashier just...smiled. A really intense, knowing smile. It totally creeped me out. Like, she knew something I didn't. Anyone else experienced anything weird at that particular Family Mart? Was I just tired? I should of taken a photo...

honestly i think you were just tired and the weird lighting in there makes everything feel off. that said i've been in there once where the guy working just stared at me for like 10 seconds before saying "irasshaimase" and it was super uncomfortable. prob just understaffed and overworked like every konbini in shinjuku

ngl i think the tax office connection is the real key here. that building is dead silent after hours and the family mart catches that leftover stillness. i went in once around midnight and the cashier was just standing perfectly still behind the counter staring at nothing like a store mannequin. made me put my stuff back and walk out. try the lawson on yotsuya-dori instead, it's three streets over and always has a normal late night vibe with actual customers

That specific Family Mart has always had a strange energy. It's right next to the tax office, which is probably why it's so dead at night compared to the ones closer to the station. I've noticed the staff there tend to cycle through quickly, maybe they're just tired and that smile was more of a thousand-yard stare. If you want a less weird onigiri run, try the 7-Eleven near the east exit of Shinjuku-sanchome station instead.

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
