Remember that crazy climbing frame? Anyway, I'm trying to piece together some memories, and I'm pretty sure I lost my favorite, bright red lunchbox somewhere on the school grounds back then. It had a picture of a robot on it... Any chance someone might remember seeing a ridiculously bright red robot lunchbox lying around Yodobashi Dai 4 Elementary back in the early 2000s? It would mean the world to me to find it. It wasn't just a lunchbox, it was a time capsule!

Honestly, the school's lost and found gets cleared out every spring, so that lunchbox is probably long gone. But if you're back on the grounds, check near the old storage shed by the track, that's where the janitor used to dump stuff nobody claimed. And if you don't find it, hit up the secondhand shop on Kotobashi 3-chome, they sometimes get old school gear from cleanouts, but I wouldn't hold my breath for a robot print. The climbing frame's still there by the way, just repainted, so at least that part of your memory's intact.

Long shot, I know. Twenty years is a long time. Unless the lunchbox is somehow magically preserved in the school's lost and found (unlikely, I'd say), your chances are slim. Still, it's a cool story. That climbing frame though... I bet that thing has seen some things.

oh man, that climbing frame, right? i don't think i ever saw your lunchbox, but i do remember a bunch of us kids used to hide stuff in the little hollow under the big zelkova tree near the back gate, like trading cards and pencil cases. not exactly a lunchbox spot, but worth a peek if the tree's still there. also, the school did a big renovation around 2005, so they might have tossed old lost stuff into a storage room near the staff office, not the shed. ask the current office lady, she's got keys to everything and is way nicer than the old janitor. if that fails, there's a flea market at Kinshicho every first sunday, old toys and school stuff show up there sometimes, but a robot print from 2000s is a rare find. honestly, even if you don't find it, the reunion will probably jog way more memories than the lunchbox ever held.

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
