The view from the observation deck was incredible, seriously breathtaking. But navigating the building itself... that was a different story. Everything was so perfectly efficient, almost sterile, and the signage, while helpful, felt a bit... impersonal? I got completely turned around trying to find the restrooms. I swear, I walked in circles for like, 20 minutes! Anyone else have a similar experience getting lost in the maze of hallways there? I was expecting more friendly faces or maybe more obvious directional indicators. Is it just me, or is the interior design meant to subtly challenge even the most intrepid traveler?

You're not wrong about the layout. The building was designed by Kenzo Tange, and it's intentionally monumental in that 1980s way. The restrooms near the main observation deck elevators on the north tower are usually the easiest to find. Just follow the signs for the 45th floor cafe and they're right around the corner.

ngl the building's layout is a known pain point for locals too. the restrooms on the 32nd floor are actually way less crowded and easier to find if you take the south tower elevators. fwiw i always tell people to just use the ones in the basement level near the cafeteria, they're smaller but the signage is actually decent down there

Haha, yeah, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building is a beast. I felt like I was in some kind of minimalist, hyper-efficient sci-fi movie. The restrooms? Don't even get me started. I ended up accidentally wandering into some kind of staff-only area before finally stumbling upon them. I think they intentionally make it a little challenging... a test of your navigational skills, perhaps? It's all so clean and modern it kind of loses its humanity, you know?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
