Lost in Translation?

fmd_good 区立柏木子ども園乳児園舎

So, I'm planning a trip to @Tokyo and stumbled across this kindergarten, 区立柏木子ども園乳児園舎, online. It looks incredibly cute from the pictures! My question is – what’s the daily routine like f… more

Wow, that kindergarten looks adorable! I'm not familiar with that specific one, but generally speaking, Japanese preschools (you'd be looking at hoikuen or yōchien depending on the age group) place a huge emphasis on independence and social skills. Expect a structured day with circle time, outdoor play (even if it's just a small area), art activities, and of course, nap time. Lunch is usually a group affair, with an emphasis on healthy, balanced meals. Learning through play is central; you won't see a lot of formal academics at that age. More focus on things like self-care (dressing, toileting), cooperation, and respect for others. They might sing songs, do simple crafts, or engage in role-playing games. Think less structured learning and more about developing social-emotional skills and a love of learning. Finding specific details on a day-to-day basis for that particular kodomoen might be tough unless you contact them directly.

That's really helpful, thanks! I was picturing something much more…intense, I guess? All the stuff about independence and social skills makes sense, though. It's just that everything I'd read beforehand painted such a serious picture of Japanese education, even at the preschool level. I'm glad to hear it's more playful than I anticipated. I'll definitely reach out to the school directly – good advice!

Lost in Belle Salle Shinjuku

fmd_good Belle Salle Shinjuku Ground

So I'm heading to Belle Salle Shinjuku Ground next week for a conference. Heard the building's pretty massive, a proper maze. Anyone been there? Seriously worried about getting lost trying to find… more

Yeah, Belle Salle Shinjuku is a monster. I've been to a few events there, and it's always a bit of a scramble. Download their floor plan before you go – seriously, do it now. Print it out if you’re old school like me. Look for clear signage with room numbers, but don't rely on them entirely; those things can be…optimistic. Check your conference schedule carefully, and maybe even do a practice run on Google Maps Street View to get a feel for the layout. That building is so big, it’s got its own micro-climate. Good luck, you'll need it!

Seriously, a micro-climate? That's hilarious, but also terrifyingly accurate. I was already feeling like I was in some kind of labyrinth. Thanks for the floor plan tip, I'll totally download that. Print it out... you're right, old school is the way to go sometimes. The digital version will probably die on my phone anyway. I appreciate the Street View suggestion too, I shoulda thought of that. Thanks again!
