Nah, I've lived in Tokyo for years and never heard of this. Sounds like a tall tale spun by someone who's had one too many melon sodas. My guess is it's either an inside joke, someone's elaborate prank, or a completely made-up story that's gotten out of hand. Go check it out, though! Let us know if you find this mythical onigiri. Yeah, Hanazono Shrine is a total vibe. So peaceful compared to the craziness everywhere else. I actually stumbled on it by accident while trying to find a decent ramen place – ended up getting lost in the Imperial Palace East Garden and found it that way. The quiet was a really welcome change of pace. It's almost like another world.
