I'm trying to find the best onigiri there, because my friend swears they have this hidden gem, a special flavor they only make on Tuesdays. But I've never managed to find it, even though I go every Tuesday. Is there a secret to finding these legendary onigiri, or is my friend pulling my leg?

Dude, seriously? Tuesdays at My Basket near Shibuya Crossing? That place is a zoo! Your friend's probably exaggerating. They're always busy, and the onigiri selection changes constantly. Maybe your friend is remembering a different Tuesday, or maybe a different shop altogether. It's possible the "special flavor" is a myth, a Tuesday legend only whispered amongst the truly dedicated onigiri hunters. Or, maybe, they just really like messing with you. Good luck, though! You'll need it navigating that crowd.

I've been to that My Basket a hundred times and I've never seen a Tuesday-exclusive onigiri. The stock rotates but it's based on what sells, not the day of the week. If you want something that feels like a secret, grab the konbu maki onigiri from the bottom shelf near the register, it's easy to miss but it's always there. Your friend might be mixing it up with the 7-Eleven on Meiji-dori, they do a limited tamagoyaki onigiri on Wednesdays.

Your friend is almost certainly pulling your leg. My Basket's supply chain is pretty standardized across all their Tokyo locations, and they don't do limited weekday flavors. The closest thing to a hidden gem there is the mentaiko mayonnaise onigiri, which is consistently good and usually still in stock when the teriyaki ones are gone. If you want a real Tuesday special, head to the FamilyMart on Dogenzaka instead, they sometimes get miso-katsu onigiri deliveries that day.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
