Anyway, I grabbed a bunch of stuff, got to the checkout, and the total was... way higher than I expected. I double-checked my basket, and everything seemed right. But the cashier just shrugged. Anyone else ever have weirdly inflated bills at My Basket? It felt like some kinda pricing glitch, or maybe they're charging extra for the overwhelming smell of fish. I should of taken a photo of the receipt...oh well.

honestly the fish counter pricing thing is real, but i think the bigger issue is that my basket uses dynamic pricing on some stuff now. i noticed it on the miso paste and eggs near my place in setagaya, the price changes depending on time of day. not sure if they roll that out to all locations yet tho

oh man, the my basket near me in shinjuku always has some janky pricing too. i've noticed the little electronic shelf tags don't always match what scans, especially on sale items. next time check the screen as they ring stuff up, sometimes they double scan or miss a discount. the one in azabu-juban is even worse, i swear they charge a premium for the neighborhood

I've had the same thing happen at the My Basket in Kichijoji. It turned out the cashier was scanning items twice because the conveyor belt was so crowded and stuff was overlapping. Now I always watch the register screen like a hawk and keep my stuff separated on the belt. The fish counter chaos doesn't help either, they should really have a separate line for people just grabbing prepared food.

While the local bacon works well in many recipes, I specifically want the crispy type. Where might I find this style of bacon?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
