Seriously, twenty different kinds? I grabbed some weird seaweed one and it was...an experience. My question is: what's the weirdest thing you've ever eaten from a convenience store in @Japan late at night?

honestly i lived in shinjuku for a bit and the real 3am move is the fried chicken from the 7-eleven near the south gate. its not weird but its so good it feels illegal at that hour

the weirdest thing i grabbed was a "natto roll" from a lawson in koenji. it was basically cold sticky natto wrapped in a sad piece of nori. i made it two bites before giving up and tossing it in a konbini trash can out back

the real weird late night grab for me was a "chicken nanban" sandwich from a 7-11 in shibuya. it looked normal enough but the sauce was this weird mayo-sweet-spicy mix that felt like it was fighting itself. i ate it anyway cause i was starving and honestly it wasnt bad, just confusing. next time try the melon pan from the bakery section at famima, its sweet and soft and pairs weirdly well with a 3am coffee from the machine

ngl the weirdest thing I grabbed was a "black thunder" chocolate bar from a famima in ikebukuro. i thought it was just a normal choco bar but it had this gritty texture like crushed up puffed rice and it was so sweet it hurt my teeth. i still finished it tho cause i was desperate for sugar. next time try the hot corn soup from the machine, its surprisingly comforting at 3am and not weird at all

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
