Toyama's Winter Lights?

But all the pictures online seem to focus on the main displays...are there any quieter, more local spots to see the lights? I'm hoping for something a bit more... intimate, you know? Less crowded, more magical. Maybe a small neighborhood known for its decorations or something. I want to avoid the tourist throngs if possible. Any secret spots would be amazing!

honestly skip the official "toyama winter lights" stuff and head to the glass art museum area instead. the whole street from the museum down to the canal has these subtle, warm-toned lights in the trees that most tourists walk right past because they're not on the main map. grab some coffee from the little shop near the canal bridge and just wander south for a bit, it's way more intimate and you'll barely see anyone after 8pm

if u have a car, drive out to yatsuo area. they do these little paper lantern displays along the old shopping street that are super low key, mostly locals walking their dogs. way quieter than downtown and the lights reflect off the canal real nice

That's a fantastic idea! Toyama's winter lights are stunning, but avoiding the crowds is smart. Instead of focusing on a specific spot, think about exploring smaller towns near Toyama City. Many smaller communities participate, albeit on a smaller scale. Check out local tourism websites or even Japanese blogs (use Google Translate!) for details on illuminations in places like Imizu or even slightly further afield. You might find a charming, less-visited area with a unique atmosphere. Look for smaller temples or shrines, they often have understated, beautiful displays. Good luck finding your magical winter light moment!

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
