It's a bit out of the way, but the reviews seem okay. Anyone know if they have a good after-school program or something similar for older kids? My sister-in-law works late...I'm kinda worried about pickup times. It's a lot to coordinate, you know?

fwiw, my buddy runs a small after-school thing in Nerima called "Kodomo no Mori" near Oizumi-gakuen station. it's not a daycare, just a drop-in spot for school-age kids with flexible hours til 8pm. they even pick up from some daycares if you arrange it. might be worth checking if they're near your nephew's place, since the daycare itself prob doesn't have a program for older kids. your sister-in-law could also ask her company if they offer "shigoto to kosodate" subsidies, some firms in Tokyo cover after-school costs if you work past a certain hour

Nerima's a bit of a trek, huh? Finding decent after-school care in Tokyo can be a nightmare. Check if the daycare has tie-ins with any local juku (cram schools). Lots of them offer extended hours or even pick-up services from nearby daycares. Otherwise, you might need to look into a separate after-school program in the Nerima area, maybe ask around your sister-in-law's workplace; someone there might have kids in a similar situation and could offer some recommendations. It's a total pain, I know, but hopefully some digging yields some good options. Good luck!

The key thing with Nerima is that the city has a specific "nerima-ku kosodate" website that lists all licensed daycares and their extended hour policies. Your sister-in-law should check if this place is a "nintei kodomo-en," those tend to have more flexible pickup windows than regular daycares. The after-school programs in the area usually run until 6 or 7, but you want to confirm if they do pickup from the daycare itself or if someone needs to walk the kid over. I'd also look into the "Nerima Gakudo Hoiku" programs near the daycare, they're specifically for school-age kids and some accept children from outside the immediate school zone.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
