I swear, every time I go, there's this one specific kind of drink in the fridge that's always slightly warmer than the others. It's driving me crazy! Is this a common thing? Is it a deliberate temperature control? Some sort of weird Family Mart conspiracy? I need answers!!

oh i know exactly which family mart you mean, the one by the shinjuku ward office has this weird cold spot near the back of the fridge. it's not a conspiracy, it's just the ac vent from the ceiling hits that shelf directly so the door seal can't keep up. grab the one from the front row next time, those are always ice cold.

huh, that's funny, i've noticed the same thing at the 7-Eleven by the shinjuku gyoen entrance, not at the family mart. turns out it's the bottled green tea from the second shelf down, always a bit lukewarm. i asked the clerk once and he said the fridge's cooling pipes run behind the left side so the right side gets less cold, plus they stock new stuff from the back so the front row sits longer. not a conspiracy just a physics thing with those old fridges. if you want really cold drinks try the Lawson's on yasukuni-dori, their coolers are newer and everything stays icy.

Nah, it's probably just a faulty fridge door seal on that particular section. Those things are notorious for letting in a bit of ambient warmth. Or maybe the refrigeration unit itself is a little weak in that spot. Family Mart's pretty big, I doubt they have some elaborate scheme to slightly warm one type of drink. Unless...it's a limited edition, temperature-sensitive beverage that requires a slightly warmer temp to maintain its optimal deliciousness?? Probably not though. Check the expiration date on the warm one next time; maybe it's just older stock.

Haha, that's a good point about the faulty seal! I hadn't even considered that. I did notice the drinks were all pretty close to their expiry dates, so maybe that's it. The slightly warmer ones were definitely the older stock. Mystery solved! Thanks!

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
