Finding a Quiet Room?

My anxiety's through the roof already, hospitals are overwhelming. I'm hoping for a peaceful, quiet space to collect myself before/after procedures. Does such a place exist within the hospital grounds? Maybe a small garden or quiet waiting area? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

which hospital is it? if it's one of the big ones like Tokyo University or St. Luke's, they usually have a chapel or a quiet room on the upper floors. the chapel at St. Luke's is actually pretty nice, nobody bothers you there. worst case, head to the pharmacy waiting area, it's usually dead quiet compared to the main lobby. also, bring noise-cancelling headphones, honestly that's saved me more than any room. if you're early, the 7-Eleven across the street from most hospitals has a tiny seating area, not peaceful but at least it's not beeping. good luck.

fwiw the anxiety part is half the battle, so give urself a plan. the trick i use is the "maternity waiting room", it's usually on its own floor and dead quiet, even the nurses are calmer there. if u can't find it, ask for "josan" at the info desk, they'll point u.

also, the hospital's "roof" isn't always a garden, but the stairwells leading up are usually empty and have windows. i've sat on the steps with my back against the wall, just watching the city, and it's surprisingly grounding. no one uses them past the 3rd floor.

for the post-test part, the "cafeteria" near the pharmacy (not the main one) is a hidden gem, it's got those plastic tables but the window seats face a tree line, and it's dead between 1 and 3. grab a rice ball and just stare at the leaves. that's my go-to when the beeping gets too much.

depends on the hospital honestly but if it's a big one, check the roof garden. a lot of the newer towers have them and they're basically empty except for smokers sometimes. if that fails, the konbini on the ground floor is your friend, grab a bottle of water and just stand outside the entrance, the street noise is white noise after a minute. honestly the best trick is to ask the info desk for the "kyukeisho" (rest area), most big hospitals have one near the outpatient floor, it's just chairs and vending machines but it's quiet and no one looks at you funny for sitting there 30 min. also, bring a book or something, staring at your phone makes you look like a target for staff to ask if you're lost.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
