Shinjuku Midnight Snack?

Seriously, my rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody was... an experience. Anyway, I saw this 7-Eleven practically glowing in the neon-drenched night. It was a haven, a beacon of hope amidst the roaring city. They had everything, onigiri, ramen cups, even those weird melon pan things I still can't decide on. My question is: what's the weirdest thing you've ever bought from a 7-Eleven at that hour? I'm genuinely curious.

ngl my weirdest score from that shinjuku 7-eleven at 3 am was a little plastic bottle of "ramune" that was actually just carbonated yogurt. tasted like a fizzy yakult that went to business school. also saw a guy buy a single banana and a pack of pocket tissues like he was prepping for a very specific kind of emergency

honestly the weirdest thing i snagged from that exact 7-eleven was a bag of freeze-dried natto. like, i respect the commitment to convenience but who wakes up at 3 am thinking "i need fermented soybeans that crunch"? it was surprisingly not terrible with a chu-hi though. also pro tip, skip the melon pan from there and grab one from the bakery under the tracks near the south exit if you're ever around during daylight hours

not gonna lie, the weirdest thing i grabbed from that 7-eleven was a single-serving bottle of "yogurt drink" that turned out to be a probiotic shot for senior citizens. it was 3 am, neon lights everywhere, and i just grabbed it without reading. tasted like sour milk and regret but i finished it while walking to the station. also once bought a mini can of corn soup that was actually hot enough to burn my tongue but i was too drunk to care

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
