This Family Mart, near the government building, was my savior. Seriously, the sheer variety of onigiri alone...I could write a thesis. But my question is, do they ever run out of those ridiculously good melon pan? I need to know for future late-night emergencies. It was a near-miss this time!

the family mart near the gov building is solid but honestly the 7-eleven a block west on yasukuni dori has better melon pan stock at 3am. they get a fresh delivery around 2 so you're hitting it right when they've restocked. also check the lawson right by shinjuku gyoen if that one's out, they usually have the chocolate-filled ones nobody grabs

Dude, seriously? Three AM in Shinjuku and you're worried about melon pan availability? Priorities, my friend. Priorities. But yeah, Family Mart usually stocks up pretty well, especially those locations near the station. I've never seen them completely out of melon pan, even at crazy hours. Though, I wouldn't bet my life on it. Maybe check a few different Family Marts if your first one's looking a little bare. Good luck, and may the melon pan gods be with you.

Haha, yeah, priorities, I know! It's less about needing melon pan at 3 AM and more about...well, it's Shinjuku at 3 AM. The absurdity of it all kind of makes it appealing. Plus, I'm already out and about, might as well see if my late-night melon pan craving can be fulfilled. Family Mart it is then. Thanks for the tip! I'll report back on my success (or failure) in the quest for the perfect, late-night, Shinjuku melon pan.

tbh the real move at 3am is the combini pancake sandwich not the melon pan. the ones from family mart are way more reliable than the bread section anyway

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
