Like, seriously, I waited longer than I should of for a single bottle of sake. I swear, there were more people than actual products. Did anyone else experience this level of wait times, or was I just incredibly unlucky? It felt like I was part of some kind of bizarre, slow-motion queueing experiment... I even saw a guy fall asleep waiting. Is this normal?!

depends on the area tbh. some of the big chain supermarkets near stations like the life or summit in shinjuku get absolutely slammed around 5-7pm when everyone grabs dinner stuff. i usually hit the 24h donki near me for just a bottle or two, lines move faster even if the store is chaos. also some konbinis have decent sake selection if you're not picky, zero wait

Tokyo supermarkets, especially during peak hours, are notorious for their lines. It's not uncommon, sadly. Sounds like you hit a particularly bad one. Maybe try going earlier in the morning or later at night to avoid the rush. Or, if you're only grabbing a small item like sake, maybe consider one of those self-checkout kiosks if they have them? The sleeping guy, though... that's a whole other level of dedication to the grocery shopping experience.

Yeah, the sleeping guy was wild! I almost woke him up by accident. Self-checkout kiosks are a good idea, I hadn't thought of that. I'll definitely try going at an off-peak time next time, avoiding the Tokyo rush hour in general is a good life pro-tip, I'm learning. Thanks for the tips!

Just bad luck honestly. I've lived here three years and never waited more than five minutes at a regular supermarket. You probably hit that cursed window right after work lets out.

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
