I've heard it's incredibly peaceful, almost too quiet. My concern is, will I find enough places to grab a decent, quick bite to eat outside of convenience stores? I'm not looking for Michelin stars, just something tasty and easy to get on a whim. A ramen shop, even a good takoyaki stand would do. Worried about ending up surviving solely on onigiri.

The soba shop by the station is a good bet, but if you head south on Meiji-dori for about five minutes you'll hit a tiny okonomiyaki place that's been there for decades. It's run by an older couple and they do a simple pork and cabbage version that's around 600 yen. The takoyaki stands are seasonal here, not a permanent fixture, so your best bet for a quick handheld thing is actually the yakitori place two blocks east of the post office. They skewer fresh chicken and grill it over charcoal from lunch until they run out, usually around 7pm. You won't be living off konbini food.

honestly you'll be fine. the bakery near the family mart on the main drag has these savory pastries that are way better than they have any right to be, like a spinach and cheese one for 250 yen. if you wander down the little alley behind the post office there's a guy who runs a tiny okonomiyaki cart on weekends, but since you're there during the week, the curry place next to the soba shop does a mean keema curry bowl that's ready in under five minutes

okay so the thing about matsunoki is that most of the food action is clustered around the station but if you walk about 10 minutes east past the little shrine there's this old-school kissaten that does a mean omurice for like 700 yen. they open at 8am and close at 3pm so it's more of a lunch spot but the owner is this super sweet grandma who makes everything from scratch. also the convenience stores here actually have decent hot food sections i'm not gonna lie, the famima down the street has a fried chicken that's actually pretty good

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
