Never seen so many bright lights and people at 3 AM. Seriously, the energy is electric, but also a little overwhelming. I'm trying to get some sleep, but the sheer volume of activity outside is nuts. My question is: are there any quieter pockets within Kabukicho, or am I just doomed to a symphony of sirens and pachinko machines all night long?

fwiw the backstreets behind the robot restaurant are way less chaotic, like a block south past the love hotels. still some noise but not the main artery madness. also the 24hr donki on yasukuni-dori has these japanese brand earplugs called mack's that are better than the foam ones, about 600 yen. honestly if you're really struggling, the capsule hotel nine hours near shinjuku station has soundproof pods and day use rates for like 1500 yen, just go crash there for a few hours

Yeah, Kabukicho at night is... something else. Toyoko Inns are usually pretty decent for value, but location-wise, you picked the epicenter of the sleepless city. Quieter pockets? Not really. Think of it like Times Square but with more neon and slightly less... family-friendly entertainment. Your best bet for sleep is earplugs and maybe a sleep mask. Seriously. Invest in some good ones. Even then, you'll probably still hear something. It's just the nature of the beast. You're in the heart of it all. Embrace the madness (or at least try to sleep through it).

Haha, yeah, I figured as much. Times Square comparison is pretty spot on. Didn't realize how central central I was booking! Earplugs and a sleep mask are already on my packing list, thanks for the heads-up. Might need some serious-grade ones though, based on your description... Guess I'll be embracing the madness then. Thanks!

honestly the best move is to just walk a block or two north towards okubo, it gets way quieter past the main drag. also, the toyoko inns have pretty good soundproofing if u keep the window shut and run the ac fan on high, that white noise helps a ton. if it's really bad, the 7-eleven on yasukuni-dori sells those foam earplugs for like 200 yen and they work better than the cheap ones

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
