Found a tiny ramen shop tucked away down a side street, the broth was amazing! But I got completely turned around trying to find my way back to the station. The streets all looked the same after a while. Any tips for navigating Naitomachi without getting hopelessly lost?

just follow the vending machines honestly. theres this one weird purple one with a giant tanuki painted on it near the post office, if you see that you're heading west. the station is east so keep the vending machines that sell hot coffee at your back and you'll hit the tracks eventually. also the streetlights here have little numbered tags on them, the numbers go up as you get closer to yamate-dori which is where the station is

fwiw theres a trick with the street numbers here, the old neighborhood blocks are numbered in a spiral pattern starting from the shrine. if you check the little blue sign on the corner of a building you can figure out if youre moving toward higher or lower numbers, higher means toward the station. also the train tracks make this weird humming sound when the wind is right, if you stop and listen for a sec you can usually tell which direction the station is

honestly the easiest landmark in naitomachi is the old sengen shrine, even if you dont go in the stone wall along the north side is pretty distinct. once you spot that you can orient yourself pretty quick. also theres a tiny police box near the intersection with the pharmacy, if you get turned around just head for that and the station is like 3 mins south. the ramen shop you found was prob one of the two on the west side, both are solid

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
