Gas Station Woes?

The place was deserted, kinda creepy, but the pump worked fine. However, the receipt printer was totally busted. No receipt, just a flashing "Error" message on the screen. I'm worried about my credit card, should I be concerned about fraud? I've never had this happen before... Is this a common thing?

honestly you're prob fine, those older self-serve pumps in Tokyo are notorious for janky receipts. if you're worried, check if the station had a security camera pointed at the pump - most do, and your card company can request footage if anything weird pops up. just keep an eye on your statement for a week or two, but I've had this happen at a Shell near Shinjuku and nothing ever came of it.

check your credit card app right now and see if the pending charge matches what you pumped, that's the real test. the printer glitch is super common at older stations, especially the self-serve ones in residential areas like setagaya or nakano where they don't bother replacing parts until they break completely. if the amount looks right you're golden, but if it's way off or shows multiple attempts then call your bank, they can reverse it in minutes

ngl the error message is almost always just the printer being dead, not the payment failing. if you used a credit card at a manned station (even if no one was out front), the transaction still goes through their main system. i'd check if there's a security booth or intercom - some of the old-school 24h stations near nerima have a guy in back who can manually reprint it if you call

While the local bacon works well in many recipes, I specifically want the crispy type. Where might I find this style of bacon?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
