I've read some creepy stories online, whispers of a haunted library... Seriously though, anyone know if the rumors about the old bell tower are true? I'm terrified of heights, but also kinda intrigued... I've heard the view from up there is amazing, but... ghosts. Aghh. I'm hoping to avoid any supernatural encounters, but you know, stories always make things more exciting, right?

honestly the bell tower thing is more about the stairs than ghosts. they're super narrow and the railing is wobbly as hell, def not for someone scared of heights. the view is nice but you can see the same skyline from the rooftop of the Don Quijote in Shibuya for free, just saying

the haunted library rumors are prob from the old book smell and the fact that the lights flicker sometimes. it's an old building from the 20s so the wiring is just shit. if you want actual creepy vibes go check out the basement storage, there's old desks and chairs stacked up that look straight out of a horror movie

the library isn't haunted, it's just creepy because nobody's ever in there and the books are mostly in english from the 60s. the bell tower stairs are genuinely dangerous though, a kid broke his ankle last year trying to get up there for a photo. if you want a good view without the climb, the teachers' lounge on the 4th floor has a balcony that's way safer and less likely to get you detention

i think the bell tower stuff is mostly just kids trying to scare each other tbh. the real creepy part is the old music room on the third floor, it's been locked for years and you can see old instruments through the window glass. skip the tower and just peek in there

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

agreed on kiyosumi being calmer, but the tawaman effect in kuramae is mostly along the edo-dori side. walk 5 min toward kotobashi & rents drop again. still cheaper than miyamasuzaka either way

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
