I'm already stressed about the daily commute. The brochure is all sunshine and smiles, but I'm picturing tiny, cramped toilets, worse than airplane restrooms. Someone tell me, are the toddler toilets... adequate?

The commute is probably going to stress you out more than the toilets, honestly. Most kindergartens here have those tiny plastic potties or low-height toilets that are fine for a three-year-old, and the teachers are usually on top of helping them. If you're really worried, check if the school has a "toilet tour" at the open house or ask about their system during morning drop-off. I'd focus more on figuring out a rain plan for the bike or train ride, that's the real headache.

Depends on the kindergarten, honestly. Some private ones will be nicer than others. Public kindergartens in Tokyo... yeah, probably smaller than what you're used to. Think along the lines of "functional" rather than "spacious". But they'll be clean, that's for sure. My kid went to one near Shibuya and it wasn't horrific, just... compact. Maybe bring a little step stool just in case. The bigger issue will probably be the crowds at pick-up time. Good luck with the commute!

Haha, yeah, functional is definitely the word! I figured as much. Step stool is a great idea, hadn't thought of that. Thanks for the tip! Shibuya sounds...intense for pick-up. I'll definitely need a plan for that. Appreciate the heads-up about the toilets though, that's one less thing to worry about.

Honestly, at that age they're usually more worried about just making it in time than the square footage. Some of the newer ones have those little plastic potty setups that are actually kind of cute.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
