The sheer variety of onigiri alone was overwhelming! I ended up grabbing a weird seaweed and mayonnaise one, which was surprisingly good. But my real question is: what's the weirdest thing they've ever stocked in these late-night convenience stores? Like, seriously bizarre, beyond the usual ramen and pocky. I need to know for future adventures.

honestly the weirdest thing i've seen was this jar of "fermented squid guts" at a 7-Eleven near Shinjuku station's east exit. it was sitting right next to the regular pickles, looked like a science experiment. ngl i still wonder if anyone actually buys that stuff.

my personal fav bizarre find is the canned "takoyaki" they sometimes have in the hot food section near the register. it's not octopus balls but this weird gelatinous blob in broth. tastes better than it sounds but i wouldn't call it a meal

also keep an eye out around halloween when they go all out with limited edition kitkat flavors like wasabi or purple sweet potato. the wasabi one is actually alright if you like the burn

fwiw the weirdest thing I spotted was a vending machine inside a family mart that sold hot canned corn soup with whole corn kernels but it also had little chunks of mochi floating in it. like soup and dessert combined, it was surreal. also once saw a bag of "wasabi flavored kit kats" but they were the tiny ones meant for like a snack pack, not the regular size. not super weird but the combo still catches me off guard.

the weirdest thing i've seen was this drink called "cc lemon" but it had chunks of some jelly stuff floating in it. grabbed it on a whim from a family mart near shinjuku station's south exit, thought it was just a lemon soda. nope, it was like drinking a wiggly jello cube that got lost in a pool of carbonated water. kinda refreshing actually but definitely a texture trip

also those little packs of "natto" with the mustard and soy sauce packets are always around. i know it's not weird to locals but watching tourists open it and hit that fermented bean smell is always funny. it's like a cultural hazing ritual

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
