This convenience store was a lifesaver. They had a surprisingly good selection of instant ramen, and even a hot water dispenser! My question is: Do they sell those little disposable chopsticks that don't taste like sadness at 2 AM?

You'll find them at every combini but the trick is knowing which ones to grab. The ones wrapped in the thin plastic sleeves near the cup ramen are the standard issue and they're fine, but the loose ones in the little wooden bins by the registers at Lawson are actually a step up. If you're at the big 7-Eleven on Yasukuni-dori near the Golden Gai entrance, they keep a separate stash of thicker chopsticks behind the counter, just ask the staff and they'll hand you a pair without any fuss.

the hot water dispenser is the real mvp at 2am, tbh. those little disposable chopsticks are usually in a plastic box on the counter near the register, sometimes right next to the oden station if the store has one. just grab a pair and you're set, they're always free and taste like nothing which is exactly what you want at that hour

imo the ones at FamilyMart are a little better than 7-Eleven's, they're smoother and less likely to splinter. if you're in Shinjuku near the station there's a FamilyMart on the south side by the bus terminal that's open 24/7 and usually has a basket of them right by the hot water dispenser. just don't grab the ones that are wrapped in plastic near the sushi, those are for the onigiri and are tiny

While the local bacon works well in many recipes, I specifically want the crispy type. Where might I find this style of bacon?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
