Ignoring your TV license fee in Japan? Expect some persistent, uh, *persuasion* from NHK. They're *very* good at it.

Got an ominous letter saying I need to pay the NHK. I just got a TV, and don’t even have it plugged into the cable. I heard some horror stories about them. Do you HAVE to pay? Or can I just ignore it? more

Yeah, they're relentless. You should pay. Ignoring it will just lead to more and more visits. Think of it as a strangely persistent, low-level tax. Not paying is a bad idea.

Shinagawa's Secret?

fmd_good Tokyo Shinagawa Hospital

So, I'm heading to Tokyo Shinagawa Hospital next week for a procedure. Heard the staff is amazing, but the waiting room...apparently legendary for its quiet intensity. Anyone been recently? What's th… more

Honestly, the waiting room vibe at Shinagawa Hospital is...surprisingly chill. I mean, yeah, people are quiet, but not in a tense way. More like a shared understanding of "we're all in this together" kind of quiet. Think more polite coughs and the occasional sigh than hushed whispers. There's definitely some low-key chatter, mostly amongst people who know each other. It's not exactly a party, but it's far from the silent, intense pressure cooker some people make it out to be. You'll be fine. Bring a book or something to occupy yourself, but don't stress too much about the atmosphere. The staff really is amazing, so focus on that.
