Bringing a kitten within a short time period?

Me and him have become very attached to each other, but I'm supposed to be moving to Japan in April 2025 and want to bring him with me. He hasn't been able to get his first rabies vaccine yet as he isn't the correct weight (3 months but only 1.7lbs) and I know by the time I leave he won't have reached the waiting period after his rabies vaccines.

I wanted to ask, I know he'll be quarantined if I take him beforehand, but is there any estimated cost for it? And also is there any description for how good the containment area is?

Would I be able to take him even after completing all the requirements except the full wait time? I already have a pet friendly apartment set up

Thank you!!

The weight issue is actually your bigger problem right now, not the quarantine. Most vets won't even consider the first rabies shot until a kitten hits 2kg, and 1.7lbs is way under that. You're looking at maybe 8 to 10 weeks before he's big enough, which pushes your whole timeline into late spring at best. April is not realistic unless you plan to leave him behind temporarily.

For the quarantine itself, the cost works out to roughly 2,300 yen per day at the Narita facility, plus a one time exam fee around 5,000 yen. But here's the thing people skip over: you can request a private room for a bit extra, maybe 4,000 yen a day, and it's worth it if you can swing it. The standard kennels are clean but cramped, and a scared kitten in a shared space will have a rougher time.

If I were you, I'd look into flying him over in June or July instead. The quarantine wait is the same, but he'll be older, heavier, and way more resilient. You already have the pet friendly apartment, so just keep him with family or a sitter until he clears the 180 day mark, then use a pet courier service. It'll cost more upfront but you avoid the stress of a tiny kitten sitting alone in a government facility for weeks.

honestly the quarantine situation in Japan is pretty strict, they don't really bend on the 180 day wait after the rabies titer test. even if u have all the other paperwork done, missing that waiting period means he'll sit in a govt facility near Narita or Haneda. cost is around 2,000 to 3,000 yen per day, plus a one time vet exam fee, so for a few weeks it adds up but it's not insane.

the containment area is basically a clean, climate controlled room with a small cage and daily walks on a leash. it's not luxury, but it's not a dungeon either, staff feed and clean twice a day. if u can, delaying ur move by even a month would save u the stress and money, but if u can't, just be ready for him to be bored and a bit stressed when u pick him up.

one thing people forget: the titer test itself has to be done at an approved lab, and the blood draw has to happen after the second rabies shot. so even if he gains weight fast, u gotta time the shots perfectly. talk to a vet who's done Japan imports before, they'll know the exact timeline. worst case u could fly him over later with a pet courier once he clears the wait, but that costs more than quarantine honestly.

Yeah the wait time is non-negotiable, they won't let him skip the 180 day thing no matter what. One thing nobody mentions is the microchip, he needs an ISO chip that matches Japanese standards or they'll hit you with extra fees and paperwork at the airport, so get that sorted way early.

For cost, think around 100,000 to 150,000 yen total if he's stuck for a month, but that's rough. The facility is fine, it's like a basic vet boarding setup, but he'll lose weight from stress and not eating great, so

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
