Hello!!

I'm flying to Tokyo literally tomorrow and Yoshitomo Nara is my favourite artist - would love to see one of his works in real life :) Does anyone know of any current installations (ideally paintings, not sculptures) in Tokyo? I am pretty sure the MOMA have some but haven't been able to find concrete evidence! I know of N's Yard too, but a little far for me :(

Thanking you !!!

artizon in kyobashi is ur best central bet for an actual painting, theyve got one of his big ones in the permanent collection & it goes on display in rotation so check the current lineup before u go, entry is around 1800 yen

also worth knowing the yoshii gallery in roppongi sometimes brokers his works privately, not a museum thing but if ur serious about seeing pieces up close they occasionally have one on view by appointment

for a quick free option, the tokyo station gallery near the marunouchi exit has shown his drawings in past group shows, small space but zero cost & open late

if you're near roppongi, mori art museum shop sometimes has his prints & postcards even when nothing's in the galleries, worth a peek if ur passing. tbh for actual paintings the big ones live mostly in aichi & overseas, tokyo's kinda thin on permanent nara. also check what's on at hikarie hall in shibuya, theyve hosted his stuff before

n's yard is actually worth the trek if u have a spare half day, chuo line out to tachikawa then a bus, takes about an hour from shinjuku. it's his old studio converted into a gallery so u get the paintings plus the whole vibe of where he actually worked. for something central, tokyo opera city art gallery in hatsudai sometimes pulls nara pieces for group shows, check their schedule before u go

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
