Where to find vintage/new Japanese texiles?

Getting into some sewing projects and hoping to incorporate Japanese fabrics - not sure if anyone can recommend a shop or neighborhood to buy stuff? Getting into some sewing projects and hoping to incorporate Japanese fabrics - not sure if anyone can recommend a shop or neighborhood to buy stuff?

honestly for vintage textiles your best bet is jimbocho or the area around nishiarai in adachi. there's a shop called okadaya in jimbocho that has a solid selection of obi and old kimono fabric you can cut up for projects. if u want new fabric go to nishi-shinjuku or the fabric district in nihonbashi near the old kimono street. i think nishiarai has a few stores that sell by the kilo which is way cheaper than tourist spots

For new fabrics, head to Nippori Fabric Town near Nippori Station. It's a whole street of shops lined up under the train tracks, with Tomoda and Hiromori being the two biggest stores. Tomoda has an incredible range of Japanese cottons and linens, and you can buy by the half-meter or full roll depending on your project. The prices are wholesale-ish so you're not paying the markup you'd see in department stores.

If you want vintage, keep an eye out for flea markets at temples like the one at Toji in Kyoto if you're going that far, or the Oedo Antique Market in Tokyo. Those are better than most shops for actual old boro or indigo fabrics that haven't been picked over.

Yeah Nippori Fabric Town is the main spot for new stuff, but if you want something more curated for sewing projects check out the shops in Kappabashi that occasionally carry fabric offcuts from kimono makers. There's a tiny place called Okura in Asakusa that sells vintage kimono silk by the meter and they usually have some indigo cotton scraps too.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
