Shunga exhibitions and erotic art stores in Tokyo?

You could check out the Yayoi Museum near Ueno, which focuses on shunga and related erotica from the late Edo period. Their collection is small but specific, and they have English pamphlets that explain the symbolism in the prints, which I found helpful for understanding the cultural context. For buying, the TAC Gallery in Kichijoji has monthly exhibitions of contemporary erotic art, often featuring young Tokyo-based painters and printmakers with prices starting around 5000 yen. It's a bit of a trek from central Tokyo but worth it for the variety.

If you're in Asakusa, the Tobacco and Salt Museum sometimes has surprising crossover exhibits on print culture that include shunga, though it's not their main focus. For buying, check out Village Vanguard in Shimokitazawa, they stock weird art zines and occasionally small-run erotic print sets from local illustrators. Kanda Jimbocho's used book district is also worth a slow walk through, a few shops like Isseido keep vintage erotica locked in glass cases but they'll let you browse if you ask.

two places i haven't seen mentioned yet. the hara museum of contemporary art in shinagawa has a small archive of shunga-influenced works from the 70s and 80s, mostly by artists who were reacting against the traditional form. their permanent collection is free on the first sunday of each month. for buying, there's a shop called tokyo shoseki in jimbocho that specializes in art books and has a locked cabinet in the back with original shunga reproductions and some contemporary erotic prints from local artists, just ask the old guy at the counter. prices are negotiable if you buy more than one piece

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
