What the hell is going on with traffic today?

Three hours and 20 minutes for a ~45km journey? Any insight on why god has abandoned me today and everyone else today? Disaster accident?

Yeah, it's been a mess all day. There's a big event at Tokyo Big Sight and they closed a chunk of the Bayshore Route for some kind of inspection, so everything's getting funneled onto the inner loop. Plus Golden Week overlaps with a few schools still in session, so you get holiday drivers and regular traffic fighting for the same lanes. If you have to do that drive again, try taking the Shuto's Route 1 through Kawasaki instead of the C2, it's usually a bit longer but less prone to total standstills.

i saw the traffic cams earlier, route 246 near shibuya was a parking lot too. think there's a big concert at tokyo dome letting out plus some construction on the expressway near yokohama. if you're stuck, might be faster to bail out and grab the highway bus from tokyo station to urawa, they run through the mess better

nah you're not cursed, it's that golden week overlap with a bunch of road closures. there's a marathon in central tokyo and some construction on the shuto expressway near shinagawa that's been backing everything up since morning. urawa to haneda is always rough when the c2 loop gets jammed but today's a special kind of hell because of the holiday traffic mixing with the regular commuters who still had to work. if you can catch the keihin tohoku line to shinagawa and then the keikyu airport line it might save you an hour next time, the ticket's like 600 yen total

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
