Why are Tokyo girls so obsessed with salary/income in the partners they date?

It's honestly baffling that things like love don't seem to matter to Tokyo girls It's honestly baffling that things like love don't seem to matter to Tokyo girls

It's not really about obsession, it's about the math of living here. A lot of women in their late twenties or thirties have already done the "fun guy with no savings" thing and ended up covering all the rent at a 2DK in Setagaya while he blew money on hobbies. Once you've watched a friend struggle through that, you start asking about income early.

honestly it's not that different from other big cities. cost of living here is insane, a decent 1K in a central ward runs you like 12-15万 a month. nobody wants to date someone who can't split rent or at least contribute meaningfully

also a lot of women here grew up watching their moms handle all the household finances while dads just worked. they saw what happens when you marry a guy who's bad with money or has unstable income. it's pragmatic more than gold-digging

tbh if you're dating in Tokyo and think love should be the only factor you're prob not thinking about how hard it is to raise a family here. daycare waitlists, school costs, housing deposits. it adds up quick

tbh it's less about love not mattering and more about survival math. a lot of women here don't have family safety nets like in the US or Europe, so marriage is basically retirement planning. if you marry a guy who's making 400万 a year at 35, you're looking at a life of 3LDKs in Kanagawa and no summer vacations abroad

also the whole "love marriage" thing is relatively new here. older generations did omiai and it was straight up about income and family background. so the obsession with salary is just a modern version of that pragmatism. it's not that they don't want love, it's that they've seen too many friends become single moms at 32 because the fun guy turned out to be a deadbeat

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
